Конкурс фотографии Capa Project в Будапеште23.10.2013 / 12:40

On the occasion of its eponym’s 100th that, staying true to Robert Capa’s innovative and original vision, aims to celebrate his still pervading spirit by showcasing new works by contemporary artists. The contest-based exhibition is atypical as the exhibition space built by Lajos Ernst is temporarily turned into a screening room where collected and selected pieces from the open contest will be on view from December 3, 2013.

The exhibition is organized to present the somewhat overshadowed medium of projected images, which plays a key role in contemporary visual culture and especially allows for experimentation, as well as the presentation of attitudes reflecting on the medium of photography and moving images. The opening of the exhibition will take place on December 2, 2013 in the Capa Center (8 Nagymező Street, Budapest). Visitors may find more information about the exhibition, the artists, and further plans of the Center on the Capa Center’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/capakozpont, as well as from the publication issued on the occasion of the vernissage.

CALL FOR PHOTO CONTEST SUBMISSIONS

The Capa Center calls for submissions by individual artists and creative groups, as well as secondary and higher art educational institutions. (Best submissions by educational institutions are awarded with a special prize by the jury.) The call aims to collect an unconventional set of projected still and moving images for an exhibition on the occasion of the Capa centenary. The long term goal of the Capa Center is to showcase visual culture; therefore, for its first exhibit, it  invites works from a broad scope of media use. (Any analog or digital projecting device that produces still and/or motion pictures may be used, including overhead projectors, slide projectors, projectors, monitors, light boxes, digital photo frames, etc. Submissions of projected photography, video, installations with light effects, and intermedia works are also accepted.)

The jury looks for entirely novel, unique concepts, and works that were created through a wider understanding of the media. It seeks to inspire but not influence applicants with the following aspects:

  • paraphrasing Capa
  • in memoriam Robert Capa
  • the war through the eyes of Capa
  • the press photo as Capa would take it today

The jury decides on which submissions to include in the exhibition; also, they select the award-winning works. Total remuneration of the contest is 1.6 million HUF.

Uploading is open from September 3 through November 3, 2013. Users can only access their own data on the server. Judging is done anonymously. Submissions are stored in the database of the Capa Center and shall not be transmitted to a third party.

With registration, applicants agree to the Capa Center’s recording and managing their personal data in accordance with existing legislation. Applicants also agree that the Capa Center publicly announces their names in connection with the contest.

Submissions, along with the documentation and the preview-size version of the exhibition will be kept for research and viewing at the Capa Center and will also become part of the Center's digital archive.

The rights of selected submissions are reserved by the Capa Center for the period of three years upon the closing of the exhibition. The Center organizes exhibitions from these works both in Hungary and abroad. Terms of use are agreed upon between parties in a separate agreement.

Final deadline of uploading submissions: November 3, 2013 11:59pm.

Technical and other conditions

Submissions can only be entered in digital form after registration. When submitting their work, applicants must name the technique they used to create their piece (equipment, as well as the image processing software).

Technical parameters for image files

File type: JPEG saved in the highest (best) quality
Size: longest side being 1400 pixel (landscape) or 1050 pixel (portrait). (Applicants accept that a failure to upload high-resolution images following the jury’s decision may exclude them from the exhibition and the contest.)

Applicants must provide their personal information during registration, while they must add titles and captions to the images upon uploading them. File names should not contain spaces or special characters. Applicants are also asked to attach a short description to each image, expounding on their thoughts about the pieces, as well as providing exact technical specifications, the original resolution of the submission, and the applied technique.

Technical parameters for moving images

Technical parameters for intermedia works, installations
